Beautiful People is a writing blog meme hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further. They post questions at the beginning of the month to do with characters in everyone’s current WIP. This month’s questions are about characters this time and you’ll be hearing from the three main characters in A Mirror of Smoke.

Joining in is simple, and you can do so by clicking on the image below to be taken to this month’s question page and link up!

If you don’t know about A Mirror of Smoke, you can read the synopsis here which also includes my Pinterest board for AMoS. Below are also the character aesthetics I’ve made for each of the three main characters. Each of them are like my brain children (well they did spawn from my mind) and I can’t wait to share their stories with you.

Character Aesthetics
  • Asha Ravelle

  • Kaiah Achelous

  • Corvus Hoshiko

Without further ado, let’s move into the 10 questions of this month!

Beautiful People Questions
What are they addicted to/can’t live without?

Asha’s in this situation from the very outset of A Mirror of Smoke, she can’t live without water and has to strive every day of her life to ensure there’s enough for her and her family. Although she’s not the only one to be working, she does feel she does the most of the work. The other things she is addicted to are coffee, cake, and swords but she can’t pass up a good dress now and again. One of the dresses she wears in A Mirror of Smoke lights up fireworks in my heart.

Kaiah is addicted to jewellery and makeup. She likes both because she feels it makes her happier and they help make her outfits shine more. Kaiah is the more fashionable one of the trio and it definitely shows in a few scenes. Other than those two, she’s into baking a lot and can’t resist baking a few treats per day in order to warm her heart. In Kaiah’s words, there’s nothing better than a homemade biscuit. However, she’s also very particular about the ingredients and only bakes with the finest of produce.

Corvus, hahahaha. Corvus is very much addicted to literature of all kinds. From reading about the mythology of the world to studying the stars and many constellations in the sky, Corvus loves reading books so much so that he accidentally got himself locked in a library where he spent the entire night reading books. He’s also very much addicted to coffee too and Kaiah’s bakes, which he buys and gets delivered to his dorm.

I have to agree, coffee is amazing.

Name 3 positive and 3 negative qualities about your character.

These character traits are taken from the start of A Mirror of Smoke, before any character arcs and changes to their personality occur.

Asha’s positive traits would definitely be ambitious due to her dream of bringing back water to her kingdom. She’s also dedicated since she wants to reach the goal and hard-working because she puts all effort into it. Meanwhile, her negative traits would be materialistic since money would mean she could buy water, stubborn because she believes her thoughts are always right. Finally, greedy because if she could, she would steal all the water in the world for her family.

Kaiah, on the other hand, is very creative as she runs her own bakery. She’s also pretty much connected to the city with whispers coming from all around about the latest gossip. A third positive trait for Kaiah would be that she’s sympathetic, she understands the needs of many which is partially why she wanted a spot on the Valiath Council. Her negative traits consist of sometimes coming across as arrogant due to her rich upbringing, irresponsible as sometimes she does things without thinking and she can be too overly-critical of herself and brings herself down.

Corvus is intelligent, from his wide reading his mind-encyclopedia is quite massive. He’s also patient but he’s very careful too. He plans a lot of things that he’s going to do and is able to be quite secretive about them as well. Corvus, however, can sometimes be a bit too prideful and can become mean when his pride is hurt. He’s also very much a perfectionist so he has to have everything exactly right otherwise it’s useless and like Kaiah, he’s very much too judgemental on himself and puts himself down a lot.

Are they holding onto something they should get rid of?

Each of my main characters hold grudges against people in A Mirror of Smoke and each one is addressed. Whether they let them go is up to the character!

If 10 is completely organized and 1 is completely messy, where do they fall on the scale?

5 – Asha
8 – Kaiah
9 – Corvus

Corvus is very much organised, he even colour codes his notes!

What most frustrates them about the world they live in?

Asha finds frustrating how selfish the other kingdoms are for not helping Adeleh in a time of crisis. They need water and yet the other kingdoms are not helping them get it. They’re readying themselves to fight over the territories within Adeleh. However, she realises that they are thinking of themselves, which is exactly what Asha is doing.

Kaiah hates how unforgiving the world is, with one small mistake meaning you could lose your home or even your life. She also hates how some people have to resort to crime in order to make ends meet, but she understands why they have to do so and wants to try to help them.

Corvus doesn’t like how people have lost faith in the Gods that once helped them and how they now resort to material goods to satisfy their needs. Even though he’s not strictly religious himself, he believes that the Gods do have a role to play in the world. He also hates how horrendous some of the kingdoms’ rulers can be both in the present and in history. This includes the decision made by the Gold Emperess to destroy all traces of magic in the kingdom after her wife was killed by magic in a tragic accident.

How would they dress for a night out? How would they dress for a night in?

There are no nights out in Adeleh, people are dying on the streets. So, when it’s a night in for Asha she loves to wear the robe her mother wore and sit by the fire.

For Kaiah on a night out, she would wear an emerald dress with matching jade earrings and her nails would be painted with an intricate design. She’d make her cheeks a little bit redder and made her eyes stand out by applying a bit of green powder to the eyelids. (Wow I’m giving a makeup tutorial here) On a night in, Kaiah would slip into a cream nightdress while thinking up recipe ideas and also going through the financial side of her business.

Corvus doesn’t really do nights out, but if he does go out it would be a patterned shirt with coloured braces. He’d probably wear black trousers and shoes with a solid coloured blazer on as well. On a night in, he’d wear a robe to bed but he’d definitely get some reading in beforehand.

How many shoes do they own, and what kind?

Asha owns one pair of shoes, they’re flat sandals, grey and almost worn out. But, they get the job done. Kaiah owns multiple pairs of shoes, most are heels and flats but does own the occasional winter boots. Corvus owns mostly smart footwear (brogues, boots and pointed toe shoes) while also owning winter boots as well.

Do they have any pets? What pet do they WISH they had?

Asha doesn’t want a pet, it would be another mouth to give water to and if she was ever starving, she’d look to it to eat. Kaiah wants a cat, perhaps a white one? Corvus owns a black cat called Lunar, she’s quite a hilarious cat at points in A Mirror of Smoke and sometimes hard to take care of.

Is there something or someone that they resent? Why and what happened?

Asha RESENTS Crown Prince Markos. It’s not even a joke, she literally goes to another country to have the chance at murdering him. Markos was her childhood friend as her mother brought dresses to the Queen. She also played music as certain festivals while Asha and Markos played in the palace gardens. However, her nightmares remember the night he fled the country. She saw something in the darkness staring at her and laugh as it too watched Markos flee the country with his mother. His father was nowhere to be seen.

Kaiah holds resentment against her father and mother, some of the houses in Eluthera and her own brother. They all knew she wanted the Valaith Council position. Although they said they’d support her, they supported her brother instead, who had no interest in politics whatsoever. The only reason was to make himself more appealing to eligible suitors who might want to marry him. Kaiah’s parents always controlled what she did in life. Getting to open the bakery was a miracle. But, Kaiah soon discovered that it was due to the fact that the shop was near a bachelor who wanted to marry her. Kaiah’s parents don’t understand her, and she doesn’t think they ever will.

Corvus holds resentment against his father, whoever it is. Why didn’t he stay with his mother? Why did he run away like his fathers told him? Who is he? There are so many questions spiraling in Corvus’ head. He also wants to discover who his mother is as well. His fathers only knew her after she had run away from her past home. They didn’t know much about her past.

Will each of them get their own revenge? Perhaps.

What’s usually in their pantry?

For Asha, it’s whatever she can scramble from bartering or hunting. Kaiah’s is usually filled with baked goods, ingredients for baking and some rare foods from different countries. Finally, Corvus’ is usually filled or usually emptry it depends on how his student funds go for the month.

Hello! I liked reading about your characters. I can tell that you gave a lot of thought into them. My favourite part was to read about their flaws, because I find that characters with flaws are more relatable and interesting. I absolutely LOVE the character aesthetics you made. It gives me an impression of what Asha, Kaiah and Corvus are like :) Cheers, Sophie Sophiexli.wordpress.com

Thank you so much, Sophie! I'm so happy that you like Asha, Kaiah and Corvus' flaws as well, it's great seeing how their flaws makes them vulnerable but also strong at the same time. Also, I'm glad you liked the aesthetics too! :D

I have a cousin named Asha. :) This is a great post! I love that Kaiah has a bakery. Baked goods are a need in my life, and I love reading about food in stories. All three of your characters sound three-dimensional and I can tell you have spend time working on them! I have a character who is also addicted to coffee. I haven't worked much on his story yet, but I hope to one day. I am currently writing a fantasy novel and I did Beautiful People this month using the main character from it. He is fourteen years old and addicted to storytelling. I enjoyed learning about Asha, Kaiah and Corvus today! https://thestorysponge.wordpress.com/2017/08/07/beautiful-people-27clearly-i-know-my-character-like-i-know-the-back-of-my-hand/

I'm so happy that you consider my characters three-dimensional. It's something I've wanted to achieve with developing my characters and your comment proves I've accomplished that! I'll definitely have to check out your beautiful people post over on your blog to learn about your fantasy novel MC too.
