Guilty As Charged
Series I've Been Meaning To Start
Version 1 - 2017

As a reader, if I’m guilty of one thing it’s that I haven’t started series that I’ve been meaning to. I want to read all of the books, but that also means that my TBR pile is massive. I’m currently being drowned in my TBR but once I’ve discovered the secret to immortality, I’ll finally beat it!

It really bugs me too because I’ve bought many Book #1s of series but I just haven’t started since they’re deep in my TBR pile. I see a new series that I’m interested in and I’m immediately taken away by it but then if I even get to read the first book, I don’t ever continue the series. Or, I’m never able to start the series when I want to.

Hence, today’s post is dedicated to a series of book series that I’ve been meaning to start but haven’t.

First, there are a few reasons why I might avoid reading series!
1 / The wait for sequels

Like I mentioned in my Bookworm Struggles post, the wait for sequels is so long! I’d rather wait for the entire series or maybe the first few books to come out and binge read them. Unless it’s a series by one of my fave authors or one that I’ve decided to buy randomly. The wait is nerve-wracking and a personal hell. (inserts gif I used before here too)

nervous waiting

2 / Sequel book syndrome

Common in some YA books, the sequel to a book in the series (typically the second book) doesn’t really live up to the previous book. However, there are a few exceptions such as A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas, City of Glass by Cassandra Clare and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling. A few examples, but I bet you could name a lot more!

3 / The first book was meh… do I continue?

Sometimes, there are points where I’ve disliked the first book and decided not to continue the series. But, there are sometimes where I do read the sequel and I’m immediately blown away by how much better it becomes. I usually consult someone who’s been in the same boat as me to see if it’s worth continuing. Or I just don’t and I continue my awkward relationship with the book series.

And now without further ado, I will embarrass myself as I share the series I haven’t started yet! (I’ll prepare my defenses for the incoming swords of attack)

Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo

I’m currently making my way through this series as a matter of fact! My best friend always raves about how good this series is and I’ve just never found the time to start it, until now!

I’ve seen so many badass photos and recommendations for it! The hype surrounding this duology was INSANE as well so I’m hoping that it does live up to the hype.

My excitement factor is about 10/10 for the series. I’m just hoping Crooked Kingdom will arrive at my house before I finish Six of Crows, or it might be an agonizing wait!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

I know Cait/Paper Fury might attack me for this but I still haven’t had the chance to read The Raven Boys! The first book of the series is in my possession, so perhaps I’ll be getting into it this Summer! There is so much hype and beautiful quotes from this series so it’ll be great getting into the Universe!

My excitement factor for this series is 5/10 just because I don’t feel an urgent need to read it. Although, I’m hoping that the quartet doesn’t disappoint me!

The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

Ok, this is perhaps one that I’m most embarrassed about as I bought Lady Midnight the day it came out with the intention to read it. One year later, and I still haven’t read it. This series is on my TBR list to read this month though, so perhaps I’ll finally be able to join the crying fest that I’ve seen happen because of Lord of Shadows. (no spoilers pls though, I don’t know why.)

I love the Shadowhunter and Downworld Realms that Cassandra Clare has created and I can’t wait to delve back into the world and hopefully learn some new things as well. PLUS, I HAVE THE EXCLUSIVE SCENE AT THE END WHICH I’M EXCITED TO READ ABOUT!

My excitement factor would be 8/10 for Lady Midnight and 10/10 for Lord of Shadows because boy, I love getting my heart ripped into shreds! BRING ON THE RUNES!

The Shades of Magic Series by V.E Schwab

I really have no proper excuse for not reading this series apart from the fact I can’t find them in Hardcovers ANYWHERE. The only one I’ve been able to find is a collector’s edition that’s not released yet but I might still pick that one up. The paperback route might be my only way to go, even though I seriously prefer the Hardcovers. I’m having this exact same problem with This Savage Song too! (weep for me)

With just knowing this is written by V.E Schwab, I already know that this book is going to be full of gloriousness and fiery passion. Plus, I’ve heard there’s lots of representation in this and can I say THANK YOU? Stories should have representation full stop.

Excitement factor? 1000000000/10 because I just can’t wait to explore what this world has to offer.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

I don’t usually read Contemporaries, but when I do I like ones with drama and a hint of romance. From the synopsis of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, I’ve been excited to read the series. Now that they’re offering it as a boxset, I’m definitely going to try and pick it up for reading this summer.

Plus, I have a hunger for diverse books and food and I saw that Lara Jean is biracial and a baker! Lara Jean has given me the best of both worlds with her fabulous self and I can’t wait to dive into her story!

My excitement factor for this series is 8/10 with two extra points coming from the inclusion of food within the story.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

This one I’m a bit 50/50 on. I loved Heartless by Marissa Meyer and I feel like I’d love this series as well. However, I’ve definitely heard some mixed messages about this series. But, the general consensus is it does get better further on into the series. So, I might just have to power my way through the first book. OR, I will insanely enjoy the first book and just love the series as a whole.

The whole world of the Lunar Chronicles seems fascinating to me. Even though I don’t read much Sci-Fi (this book seems quite sci-fi to me), I feel like this would be something that I’d love to read.

My excitement factor for this is 6/10 but I hope to have this read by the end of the year!

I’m so embarrassed! But, are there any series that you’re ashamed you haven’t read yet? Or are there series you’re waiting to continue reading?

Also, Happy Independence Day to all of my American Friends! You guys rock!

Oh man these are all great series! Have you read the Shadow & Bone series? I definitely recommend reading that before Six of Crows! Not only is it an incredible series, but it sets up the world and the story and you'll feel so much more invested in Six of Crows if you do! Also Lunar Chronicles is so good!

I haven't read Shadow & Bone yet and I'm currently reading Six of Crows. But, I feel like I can always reread SoC after reading Shadow & Bone in the future to further my understanding. Lunar Chronicles is good? I'll trust your judgment!

Personally I love The Lunar Chronicles and the books do get better as you move along. As for To All the Boys I've Loved Before it's just a super cute read, but stock up on pastries of all kinds because the crave will be real. I've yet to finish the Shades of Magic series (oops) but the first two books are AMAZING! So, you really can't go wrong with any of these.

Six of Crows & Shades of Magic are incredible! Two of my favorite series of all time. As for TRC...well, it left me disappointed. I really loved the premise and characters and world, but unfortunately the ending of the 4th book is a love-it-or-hate-it kinda situation, and I fell into the latter category. :/ On the other hand, you're not alone in missing out on The Lunar Chronicles. I've wanted to pick them up for ages! Must. Get. On. It.

I cannot wait to get onto the Shades of Magic trilogy! I'm reading Six of Crows at the moment and it is glorious. The ending to TRC was love-or-hate? I think I might still read it for the adventure and now that I'm forewarned about the ending, I can expect something 'meh' to come. Oh yes, we both must get on The Lunar Chronicles soon!

I am still waiting for my copy of the Crooked Kingdom which Amazon is very keen on delaying, so until that arrives I won't start this series. I've read the Lunar Chronicles and it was too damn good and I have no words for Lord of Shadows but after that damn cliffhanger, I wished I had waited until book 3 was out. As for the Raven Cycle, it was a DNF for me but I am willing to give it another try sometime in the future (and yes I hope Cait doesn't see this either and she has already shouted at me once! xD ) And, I the other two series are on my list too, I hope to start them soon!!

    • I'm going to hope Book Depository delivers Crooked Kingdom ASAP because I don't think I'll be able to deal with it delayed. I definitely have to give the Lunar Chronicles a try and CLIFFHANGERS? NO. I'll have to join the LoS party to cry now haha. I hope you can give TRC another try! Let's hope you can start the other two soon as well so that we both can discuss them together!

READ THE RAVEN CYCLE! You won't regret it, trust me!

*looms ominously in the background* YES YES YOU SHOULD READ THE RAVEN CYCLE AND MAKE YOUR LIFE 5000 X BETTER.???????? Also I really loved To All the Boys too! I don't even read a lot of fluffy romance, but it was super cute and had a huge emphasis on family...and baking. And I mean, what's not to love about a book full of cake.???? Also I'm a HUGE fan of ADSOM. Have you tried looking for it on Book Depository? Just bought the first one (I didn't own it for ages!) on there a month ago and they were in stock. Trouble is they seem to be more expensive than regular hardcovers? *cries*????

    • WILL HAVE TO READ RAVEN CYCLE SOON, I PROMISE! I'm glad you like some of the other series too, it makes me feel a bit easier about reading them! I've tried looking on Book Depository too but nothing. There's Amazon Global Store but I've never heard anyone shopping on there so I'm a bit iffy.
